Medication Management

Medication Management

Effective pain medication management is a critical component of any comprehensive chronic pain treatment plan. At Southwest Pain Management, Dr. Philip Morgan and our team provide expert medication oversight for patients throughout Southern California — including Ventura, Woodland Hills, Hawthorne, and the greater Los Angeles area — ensuring that every prescription serves a clear therapeutic purpose while minimizing risks and side effects.

What Is Pain Medication Management?

Pain medication management is the ongoing process of evaluating, prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting medications used to treat chronic pain. Unlike a one-time prescription, medication management involves regular follow-up appointments, careful assessment of how well your medications are working, monitoring for side effects and drug interactions, and making adjustments as your condition changes.

Our goal is simple: help you achieve the best possible pain relief with the lowest effective dose, while maintaining your safety and quality of life.

FAQs

How often do I need medication management appointments?

For most patients on chronic pain medications, follow-up appointments are scheduled every 1–3 months. Patients on opioid therapy may need to be seen monthly, especially when starting or adjusting a medication. As your treatment stabilizes, visit frequency may decrease. Dr. Morgan will determine the right schedule based on your individual needs.

Can a pain management doctor change my medications?

Yes. A pain management specialist like Dr. Morgan can prescribe new medications, adjust dosages, switch you to more effective alternatives, and safely taper medications that are no longer needed. We coordinate with your primary care physician and other specialists to ensure seamless care.

What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid dependence?

Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medications — such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) or naltrexone — with counseling and behavioral therapy to treat opioid dependence. MAT is considered the gold standard for opioid use disorder treatment and is available at Southwest Pain Management.

Are there non-opioid alternatives for chronic pain?

Absolutely. Many chronic pain conditions respond well to non-opioid options including anticonvulsants, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory medications, topical treatments, and muscle relaxants. Dr. Morgan prioritizes non-opioid approaches whenever possible and will work with you to find the most effective combination for your pain.

How much does medication management cost?

Medication management visits are typically covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicare. Your cost depends on your specific plan’s copays and deductible. The medications themselves vary in cost — many effective non-opioid pain medications are available as affordable generics. Our team can discuss cost-effective treatment options with you.

Will I have to take pain medication forever?

Not necessarily. The goal of medication management is to achieve optimal pain control while working toward reducing or eliminating the need for medications when possible. Many patients find that combining medication with physical therapy, injections, and lifestyle modifications allows them to decrease their medication use over time.

What happens if my pain medication stops working?

If your current medication becomes less effective — a phenomenon sometimes called tolerance — Dr. Morgan has many options available. These include adjusting the dose, switching to a different medication in the same class, adding a complementary medication, or incorporating non-medication treatments such as injections or physical therapy.
