Facet Joint Injection Information

Anatomy

A facet joint injection involves placing a local anesthetic (numbing medication) with a steroid (anti-inflammatory) into a facet joint of the spine. Facet joint injections are considered a non-surgical therapeutic interventional treatment for pain and inflammation. What is the goal of facet joint injection? The goal is to provide pain relief so that you are able to resume normal activities and experience better mobility and function in your life.

The Procedure Itself

After you are lying face down on the procedure table, the injection site is cleansed with an antiseptic. This procedure involves inserting a needle through the skin, muscle, and soft tissues, so there is some slight discomfort involved. An injection of local anesthetic (numbing medication) will be administered in the area where you are experiencing pain. Sterile gloves are used throughout the entire injection procedure. Fluoroscopy guidance is used for the exact placement of the needle within the joint. Once the needle has been guided into the joint successfully, diagnostic and/or therapeutic medications are injected into the joint. The anti-inflammatory medication helps reduce inflammation within the joint, which in turn may help alleviate the pain over a longer period of time (typically for several months, up to a year).
